It has been covered & has had different memory foam pads on it for many years. The mattress has finally “breaking in” but still too firm for hip joints when side sleeping. This is not a cheap buy, but it will outlast and keep its shape for much longer than most memory foam toppers. Also, when we washed the organic cotton cover the black color on the bottom stained the cover and completely washed out, it went from black to light gray and the white cover became grayish.
